Hometown: Fayetteville, Arkansas

Fun Fact About Yourself: I stopped counting how many countries I had visited in the early 40s.

Major:
Computer Science

What did you do in the military? Airborne Cryptolinguistic Analyst
What was your proudest accomplishment in the military? Serving with the men and women of the United States Special Operations Command overseas.

How did you hear about S2S? I was introduced to S2S through Chris Gregg, a lecturer at Stanford. I can’t thank him enough for his personal effort in both introducing me to S2S and writing a recommendation letter for me after I took his course at Stanford.

What was the best part of S2S for you? S2S helped me focus my efforts, gave me great advice for writing letters, and helped me navigate the extremely murky landscape of being a veteran trying to transfer to a top college.

Why did you decide to pursue college? I had decided I wanted to leave the military life behind but realized I didn’t have the knowledge I wanted to do what I wanted, so I went back to school to acquire it.
How has the transition been from the military to civilian life? Thanks to organizations like S2s and the amazing support of the GI Bill, much easier than I anticipated.

What’s your favorite part about Harvard? Once you get past the name of Harvard, the availability of top-tier faculty from any discipline is astounding. We have unlimited cross-registration with MIT, which means whether you want to study a hard science or something in the humanities — you can take a course taught by one of the top scholars in the world.

What advice would you give to future applicants? For me, there were two steps to the plan. First, set a goal. Second, make a little change towards that goal every day. I chose to go to community college instead of directly enter a 4-year institution because I would not have been able to transfer to a top school out of the military. If you’re willing to put in the work today, you are a competitive applicant at every school in the world.

What are your goals post-graduation? I want to leave the world a little bit better than I found it. I’m not really sure it’s possible to make it better than I left it.
